William Coney: A Life of Service and Family Legacy
William Coney was born on March 4, 1745 in Stoughton. He was the son of Nathaniel and Sarah Morse Coney. William was the brother of Sarah Coney, who became the wife of Aaron Guild.
On January 12, 1771, William Coney married Rebekah Bullard, the daughter of John and Rebeckah White Bullard. Rebeckah Bullard Coney was born around 1752.
On April 19, 1775, William Coney answered the call as part of William Bullard’s militia company and mustered in Dedham. He served for ten days at that time. Coney was also called to service for five days on March 4, 1776 when the troops of General Washington took over Dorchester Heights and drove the British out of Boston.
William and Rebekah had four sons: William, Jabez, Luke, and Lewis.
William Coney died on March 18, 1816 at the age of 70. His widow, Rebekah Bullard Coney, died on January 6, 1831 of old age. They were interred at the crest of Old Parish’s hill in lots 228 and 229 respectively.
The footstones for each were found at Highland Cemetery and, along with their gravestones, were reset by volunteers.
