There are three gravestones in the Wheelock family lot in Old Parish Cemetery.
Gilbert Wheelock was born in 1810 in Attleboro. On December 9, 1847, he married Harriet L. Bowen in Boston. Harriet was born in 1827 in Wells, Maine. Gilbert Wheelock was a machinist.
On July 24, 1850, George G. Wheelock was born. He died on September 30, 1851 and was buried in Old Parish Cemetery, lot 34. His stone reads:
George G.,
only child
of Gilbert and
Harriet L. Wheelock
Died Sept. 30, 1851;
aged 1 yr. 2 mos.
--
Sleep on sweet babe
And take thy rest
God willed thee home
He thought it best.
On July 21, 1852, Charles Eustis Wheelock was born. (One record indicates that this child was named Gilbert C. Wheelock.) The child died on August 8, 1852, only 18 days old. On October 26, 1852, Harriet L. Bowen Wheelock passed away at the age of 26. Her stone reads:
MRS. HARRIET L.
wife of
Gilbert Wheelock
died Oct. 26, 1852
Aet. 26.
And their only child
CHARLES EUSTIS.
died Aug. 8, 1852;
Aet. 18 dys.
Husband in thy lonely sorrow
Giving grieving thoughts their birth,
Trust in God – thy loved ones spirit
Guards thee still as when on earth.

Why this stone says “their only child” when there had been another “only child” buried a year earlier is not known.
In 1855, Gilbert Wheelock married Lucy H. Hurd. She had been born on January 17, 1829 in New Hampshire. They had two children: Charles Gilbert Wheelock, born in 1856, and Edgar H. Wheelock, born in 1859.
Gilbert Wheelock died on March 13, 1888, in Boston. He was 77. His second wife Lucy Hurd Wheelock died on March 1, 1901. They are both interred in Old Parish as well. Their gravestone reads:
GILBERT WHEELOCK
Died Mar 13, 1888.
Aged 77 Years
8 Months.
LUCY HURD, His wife
Died Mar. 1, 1901.
Aged 72 Yrs. 1 Mo.

George G. Wheelock’s stone was broken in half. It has been repaired and reset by our volunteers. The family grouping is now complete.
