Oliver B. Everett: A Difficult Life
Lot 170
Oliver Blackman Everett (1791-1875)
Oliver Blackman Everett was born on May 2, 1791, the son of William Everett Jr. (lot 166) and his wife, Sarah Blackman Everett (lot 167) and the brother of Betsey (lot 168) and Joel (lot 165). Oliver never married.
It seems that Oliver Everett had a difficult life. In the 1850 Census, he was a laborer on the farm of Benjamin Davenport in Mendon, Massachusetts. By the 1865 Census, Oliver was a pauper. The 1870 Census records the then 79-year-old Oliver B. Everett as a pauper in the Town Pauper Asylum in Mendon where Richard Carter and his wife, Rachel, were the manager and matron of the asylum. He died there of old age. At his death, his occupation was listed as “farmer.” Returned to the home of his birth, his simple stone, with his name misspelled, reads:
OLIVER B. EVERITT
Died
April 17, 1875.
Aet. 83 yrs. 11, m.
