Leonard Fisher, Jr. (1822-1900)

Leonard Fisher Jr. was born in 1822 in South Dedham. His parents were Leonard Fisher and Abigail Smtih Fisher. He lived in the family farm working farmlands bordered by Neponset, Pleasant, and Cross Streets. He did not marry.

Upon his death, on March 30, 1900, the Norwood Advertiser and Review wrote of the loss of one more link to Norwood’s past.

“Mr. Fisher lived his life at the old homestead on Neponset Street, where three generations of his ancestors have lived and died. His death brings home to us again the fact that the former things are passing away. Not many landmarks so long associated with the history of one family remain in our midst. For the first time since 1779 the house which has been the home of the Fishers is left without one of the family to occupy it.

“The death removes from our town one of its oldest native citizens and a man whose staunch integrity and uprightness were ever revealed in his relations as brother, friend, and neighbor. Many of the poor and needy of our town have felt the kind helpfulness of this man. He was reserved and retiring in his way of living, but ever ready to give help in a quiet way when appeal was made to him.”

He was 77 years old and died of old age after a bout of influenza.

The Fisher homestead on Neponset Street later burned down; today the Boston-Providence Highway cuts off the northerly end of Neponset Street.
