Emma M. Ellis (1850-1901)
Born on August 3, 1850, Emma Ellis was the daughter of John Ellis (1820-1899) and his wife Louisa S. Pond Ellis (1828-1917). John Ellis was a farmer and the family home was at 347 Walpole Street. The Ellis family was one of Norwood’s oldest and most prominent families.
Emma Ellis remained unmarried until her death at 50. Her father died in 1899 from hepatitis.
Emma’s obituary in the Norwood Advertiser and Review was poignant and sincere. After reporting on her death on May 26, 1901, after a brief illness, the newspaper continued that Emma “was of a fresh and youthful appearance and had a happy genial disposition which won her many friends. She led a good and useful life in ministering to the needs of an aged and invalid mother and it is peculiarly sad that she who enjoyed life so much and fulfilled its duties so well should be so suddenly taken away.”
Louisa S. Ellis lived sixteen years longer; she died on August 16, 1917 at the age of 89.
Emma Ellis was a member of the Universalist Church. She is interred at Old Parish Cemetery with her parents.
