Caroline Rhodes, a Solitary Stone in a Family Plot

Caroline E. Rhodes (1831-1880)

Caroline E. Rhodes was born on March 18, 1831 in Walpole. Her parents were Eliphalet Rhodes, Jr. and Sarah Gay Rhodes. They had married in 1811 and had seven children.

Caroline never married and census records show no occupation. She lived with her mother, Sarah Rhodes, in Walpole until her mother’s death in 1870 of heart disease. Subsequently, she lived for a time with her brother and his family in Medfield where he was a merchant.

She was residing at Longwood Station, Brookline, Norfolk County, at the time of her death on December 13, 1880. She died of a cancerous tumor at the age of 49.

Although interred in the family lot, Caroline has her own marble gravestone with acanthus leaves carved on its front.
