A Family Gravesite Relocated

Mark C. Hoyle (1814-1876)

Sarah E. Belknap Hoyle (1818-1876)

 

Mark C. Hoyle was born in England on April 25, 1814. When he arrived in America is unknown. In 1840, he married Sarah E. Belknap. They had at least three children: Clara Belknap Hoyle (1841-1925) who married Francis Everett; Maria Hoyle (1842-1906) who married George Willard Gay; and Raphael Hoyle (1854-1903) who worked at the tannery.

Mark Hoyle was a cutter at the tannery as well. The family resided on what is today’s Hoyle Street, which extends between Washington Street and Walpole Street, the two main thoroughfares of the nineteenth century.

Mark Hoyle died on January 22, 1876. Eight months later, Sarah Belknap Hoyle passed away on September 18, 1876.

 

Initially interred in Old Parish Cemetery, they were removed to Highland lot 87 sometime before the death of their son, Raphael, in 1903. Daughter Maria Hoyle Gay and her family are interred in lot 86 at Highland Cemetery.
